But what is it? MMA stands for Mixed Martial Arts. If you\\\'ve been following my articles and posts for the past few years you wold know that the broad term "Martial Arts" has many branches. The UFC has been successful in promoting this hybrid and intergrated style of fighting to mainstream USA. In MMA you must be able to adeptly use a combination of fighting styles (jiu jitsu, kickboxing, grappleing etc) to dominate your opponent.

It has always been my opinion that a student MUST have a strong base in one martial arts and cross train in several other arts inorder to become a complete martial artist.

The State of New York at this time does not legally permit MMA Style events. Most area events are held in New Jersey and Conn. This is about to change. Recentlt The NYS Legislature under alot of pressure from NY MMA fans agreed to do studies on having MMA legalized in NY. An October 2009 vote was originally scheduled on MMA but new rumors have it pushed to early 2010.

There is no disagreement that MMA fighting can be dangerous . We in the Martial Arts Community applaud The NYS Legislature for looking into legalizing MMA . This way it can be better govererned and made safer for the fighters. It will also add millions to the NYS Tax Fund.

The New York MMA Organization has a website that will be a helpfull base of information www.NYMMA.org

In this new year let me bring you this thought. Martial Arts can have a place in most all of our lives. Yes to different levels but even a "Superstar" found Karate Training to bring him to an even higher level.

This is about "The King" Elvis Presley who today decades after his death is still an American Icon. Elvis was drafted into the US Army in the late 1950's. It is while he was stationed in Germany and France that he first started studying karate. Shotokan a Japanese art was his first learned martial art. Reports have it that he was karate obsessed and would study and practice hours everyday.

In 1960 Elvis was already back in The United States. It was in California that met Ed Parker. Ed Parker was a student of James Mitose who broght Kempo/Kenpo to America. Ed Parker is known as Father of American Kenpo. Elvis studied under Ed Parker with other Hollywood Legends as Steve McQueen and James Coburn. It has also been noted that during Elvis Presleys Black Belt Test in Kenpo, that it was a very rogh experience. Elvis took his karate training seriously and studied and practiced on a regular schedule the rest of his life.

In all his action films and on stage concerts Elvis karate training is obvious in his stamina, physique and fluid movements. I believe it gave him an added inner strength to become a Superstar Entertainer.

In 1974 Elvis Presley and GrandMaster Ed Parker gave a Karate Demonstration in Elvis hometown of Memphis Tennesee. After his death Elvis Presley was inducted into The Martial Arts Hall of Fame.

Karate Tournaments are important to most Martial Arts students. Some go and compete in these events to win prizes cash or trophies. My students attend , signup and compete for a very different reason. They measure and demonstrate the skills they learn and practice in everyday Karate Class. They compete against other Karate Students from other schools and styles. This is a great way to grow and measure your skills at the highest level.

At my tournament I stress participation over competition. I believe you are a "Winner" for giving your BEST EFFORT.
I have a event for new students who have never competed and are learning new karate skills. The event is called Demonstration. where all students who apply get a winners award.

The Biggest trend in martial Arts today is Mixed Martial Arts and MMA Competitions. It seems like there is no limit to how far it will go. It has caught the publics eye both positively and negative. Most competitions are held in either an octagon ring or a cage with wire fenceing surrounding the ring. Fighters square off matched by weight and experience. They fight timed rounds with a referee and doctor present.
Fighters usually have a expertise in a fighting art and have cross trained in other arts . Long Island can say that Matt Serra and his trainer Ray Longo are both World Famous MMA Fighters. Ray has long been known to be a great strikeing trainer. Ray is a Master Kempo Instructor. The martial art we teach in our schools. Matt just recently lost The World Championship in a rematch in Montreal Canada . Another Great former Champion was Chuck Liddell of California . Kempo is well suited to MMA because Kempo teaches (karate, jiujitsu, grappling, and kung fu) in its fighting techniques. I believe any one who considers MMA fighting train and get a strong base in a solid martial art.

I want to share with you about a new show "Fight Quest", which has just completed its first season on The Discovery Channel. Fight Quest is the newest show to highlight martial arts and fighting. Other shows that have come before such as Extreme Martial Arts and Human Weapon have been excellent in the way they real martial arts and their applications. It seems The Discovery Channel has a winner in its new weekly series FIGHT QUEST. I have been featured on The Discovery Channel on several occasions teaching martial arts & self defense.

Fight Quest follows two guys Jimmy Smith a veteran mixed martial artist and Iraq Army Veteran Doug Anderson in their World Adventure to train and then fight in The Worlds top martial arts. Both Doug and Jimmy arrive in the Homeland of a Martial Art such as (Isreal) Krav Magna. and then split up and train with different masters . They train for a full week of grueling hard martial art workouts. On the last day they test their training against expert fighters in that art.

By watching the show you get a feel for the art of training that week, such as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu against The World Famous Gracie Family. You have to gives these guys alot of respect . They take alot of punishment in both training and fighting. But they also get true knowledge of that art and its fighting techniques.

The First season just ended and Ive been informed new episodes are already being filmed . The last episode was my favorite "Kajukempo" or Kempo , my art and the art we teach in The American Academy of Self Defense. It was filmed in California where James Mitose brought the art of Kempo in 1947 from Hawaii. Both Doug and Jimmy had all they could handle facing Kempos Dragon Circle . But as usual they did great and taught the viewing public alot about the art.

There are many ways to refer to a Martial Arts Instructor. The most common term used in referring or addressing your instructor is "sensei".Sensei means to most teacher or instructor, but I prefer the Eastern meaning. "One who has walked the path before me. In my opinion the sensei is the most important part of any Martial Arts Training. A sensei (teacher) must posess many skills. A Black Belt alone does make a good instructor.

A Good Instructor must have good fundemental skills in the art he teaches and must be able to communicate these skills to his student. I have been quoted that you should train the body and spirit together. This means that not only to learn a martial art technique but also completly understand its application .A good instructor can teach the newest student and an advanced student. The Instuctor can train you both physically and mentally.

I believe also that the best instructors are good role models. The keep their appearance manicured and stay in top phyical condition. "LEAD BY EXAMPLE" is what you'll hear me my Instructor staff. My instructors also represent our schools in Martial Arts Competions either karate, MMA or Kickboxing.

It was a great success with over 175 competitors and 350 guests. It ran smoothly and on time, and was sucessfulin all ways. The next tournament will be in mid 2008 at The Holiday Inn in Ronkonkoma.

This time of year in my school we have Black Belt testing. It happens only once a year and is a very special event.
Many parents ask me when their child starts training,How long will it take my child to get his Black Belt? My answer is always the same. Typical students attain a Black Belt in 4-8 years. And it certainly depends on the commitment of the student and parents.

Physical training to train your body to its highest level takes years of hard work and workout regimen.Training in your disipline, learning developed martial arts techniques such as taekwon do, karate or kung fu. I believe the most important and difficult is training your mind and spirit to the Black Belt Level. In my schools we stress good moral values and citizenship. (The code of the Bushido) or Samurai Values. We want our Black Belts to be Leaders in our Community and perhaps World leaders in the future.
They have trained for years and achieved a Black Belt. We say at this time we say You are now a Leader in the Dojo and everywhere you go.

Let me say there is no typical Black Belt test. Every style and test administrator runs a Black Belt Test in their own way. Each martial arts style stresses the techniques and strengths of the system trained in. I can state that it will take all your training and physical strength to pass this evaluation. after the test you feel you "earned" your Black Belt.

Training does not stop at a Black Belt. There are 10 levels , with the highest being a Grandmaster. Richard Fescina has just attained that level. He was promoted recently by Aidrian Empeardado, Worldwide head of Kajukenpo.Congratulationd Grandmaster Fescina.

As always I leave you this thought...A teacher can open the doors
but it is up to the student to walk through them...
